With its growing residential surroundings and increasing park use, the City is committed to enhancing the recreational amenities available to residents of all ages.

As part of this commitment, the City is advancing improvements that support active outdoor recreation, promote community well‑being, and offer inclusive, family‑friendly park experiences.

Project Overview

The City of Thorold is proposing the design and construction of a new splashpad and basketball court at Merritt Meadows Park. These additions aim to expand recreational opportunities for children, youth, and families while strengthening the park’s role as an accessible, multi‑functional community hub.

Splashpad Component

The proposed splashpad will feature:

  • A variety of interactive and inclusive water play elements,
  • A design suitable for children of all ages and abilities,
  • Layouts and features selected based on resident feedback,
  • Safe, durable surfacing and infrastructure that complements the park’s existing landscape.

Basketball Court Component

The project also includes installing a new basketball court designed to support youth recreation and promote active living. The court will provide:

  • A durable playing surface,
  • Standard basketball equipment,
  • Opportunities for both casual and organized play.

Together, these new amenities are intended to enrich community use and enhance the quality of life for residents in the Merritt Meadows neighbourhood.

Project Status and Community Engagement

The project is currently in the planning and design phase. Community input is essential to the process, and the City invites residents to review the preliminary concepts, ask questions, and share comments on the proposed splash pad layout and basketball court placement.

Feedback collected will be carefully considered and incorporated into the final design.

  • Share Thorold is great at doing new things. The murals along the canal trail, or Catherine's mural downtown thorold beside the dentist. BUT once the accolades and ribbon cuttings and plaque presentations are finished there is no plan for up keep and they fall apart. Maplecrest park has a basket ball court and playground. When was the last time the city did maintenance or upkeep on it?? How about fixing what we have? The skate park in Thorold south, the bathrooms, all fell to pieces and werent repaired. I have seen zero evidence the park will be taken care of. Even the dog park is already falling apart and needs up keep. Part of being great is maintaining what is already built. Will up keep be factored into building this new wonderful park? Or will it just be another photo op for the current Mayor and counsel? on Facebook Share Thorold is great at doing new things.
